[Free//] Lil Nas X – Old Town Road (Remix) Full Single Track Download##
The controversial hit, which was removed from Billboard's country chart, now has a mainstream name lending his voice. Does that legitimize it for the genre? Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” has been a subject of controversy, in and out of the country music world, for whether it merits being officially included in that genre. But he’s found at least one champion from within the mainstream country world: Billy Ray Cyrus, who has just showed up for a duet on a remix of the viral sensation.
“I loved the song the first time I heard it,” Cyrus said in a statement. “Country music fans decide what they like. Not critics or anyone else. Waylon Jennings once told me every once in a while the industry outlaws someone because they’re different. Country music fans don’t need to be defined by critics. I’ve always said, don’t think inside the box, don’t think outside the box. Think like there is no box,” added Cyrus, saying he was “honored to collaborate” with Lil Nas X.
Well, if there’s anyone you want giving your song some country cred, it’s obviously Billy Ray Cyrus. Amid the ongoing controversy over 19-year-old rapper Lil Nas X’s viral country-trap hit “Old Town Road” getting banned from Billboard’s country chart for being deemed not country enough, Cyrus has swooped in to countrify it some more. So now instead of just having horses in the back and Lil Nas X ridin’ on a tractor, we’ve got Cyrus singing about the old guitar and Marlboro man swagger — you know, that real Jackson Maine–approved country stuff. (Meanwhile, country singer Jake Owen is apparently also collabing with the teen, and Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley has openly supported “Old Town Road.”)
Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus dropped a remix of the viral hit "Old Town Road" on Spotify Friday and everyone on the internet instantly grabbed their lassos and donned their cowboy hats.
Fans went crazy for the collaboration on the song that sparked controversy after Billboard kicked it off of its Hot Country chart in March because the song did not adequately satisfy genre requirements "in its current version."
"billy ray came to my studio session last night and gave me one of the most uplifting talks i have ever heard in my life," he wrote. "shit almost brought me to tears like deadass."
Lil Nas X’s lonesome cowboy trap ballad, “Old Town Road,” is a runaway hit that’s been banished from the Billboard country charts almost as quickly as it broke them. Evidently the song isn’t country enough — which is in and of itself a ridiculous sentiment, given country music’s recent years spent gleaning influence from Southern hip-hop.
Instead of letting the country life of “Old Town Road” die there, Lil Nas X decided to amp it up: For the official remix, he called up Billy Ray Cyrus, a country veteran with his own history of infuriating genre purists. Together, they’ve created something magical. Cyrus’ “Old Town Road” remix is a campy bit of country-trap that is somehow as earnest as it is utterly insane. The matrix is glitching, but maybe we don’t need it to get fixed any time soon.
