Big Colors was set to be the first installment in a 2019 trilogy of albums. He revealed that the second album was titled Wednesdays.

On Wednesday, February 13, it was reported that several women accused Ryan Adams of abuse—ranging from emotional manipulation to sexual misconduct—in a New York Times report. It included interviews with Mandy Moore—the musician and actress who was once married to Adams—as well as Phoebe Bridgers and singer/songwriter Courtney Jaye. One woman claimed she was 15 and 16 when Adams engaged in sexual conversation with her and exposed himself to her. An FBI inquiry into Adams’ alleged interactions with that underage woman has been opened. Karen Elson and Liz Phair also alluded to bad experiences with Adams in social media statements. Musical equipment companies Benson Amps and JHS Pedals, which produced signature amplifiers and guitar pedals with Adams, have also ended their relationships with the musician.

Earlier tonight (February 15), Jenny Lewis took to Twitter to express her thoughts on the allegations made against Adams. “I am deeply troubled by Ryan Adams’ alleged behavior,” Lewis wrote. “Although he and I had a working professional relationship, I stand in solidarity with the women who have come forward.” Lewis and Adams collaborated together on Lewis’ 2014 solo LP The Voyager, and is slated to feature on her forthcoming album On the Line. Find her tweet below.

After the first Times article was published, Ryan Adams took to Twitter to deny the allegations made against him. “I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes,” Adams said on Wednesday. “To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly. But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate.”

Earlier this month, the first of three Ryan Adams albums slated for 2019, Big Colors, was put on hold indefinitely after several women, including Phoebe Bridgers and Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore, told the New York Times about Adams’ alleged history of emotional abuse and sexual misconduct. Big Colors was due for an April 19th release on Adams’ own label Pax-Am, via Blue Note Records and Capitol Music Group. The album’s iTunes pre-order and pre-release listing on streaming services were quickly pulled. But much of Adams’ core audience still buys music at record stores. What does it mean for those shops when a major artist has his album pulled? And as streaming platforms face scrutiny for how they handle music by artists accused of abuse, what is the responsibility of a physical record store in the #MeToo era?

The economic impact on independent record stores from the cancelation of Adams’ album should be minimal, shop owners tell Pitchfork. But at a time when legacy shops keep closing, that’s not no impact.

Drift Record Shop, a well-regarded UK independent music store, recently announced its “worst Monday turnover in about eight years.” To blame for the lousy sales numbers: refunds of Big Colors pre-sales. Drift owner Rupert Morrison tells Pitchfork that the store had pre-sold 51 copies of Big Colors on vinyl, in a special “indie shop” edition. At a retail price of £17.99 (about $24), the total refund was £917.49 (about $1,200), plus shipping. But when people pre-ordered Big Colors along with two or three other titles, the cancelation affected the total shipping weight and price. “It’s been a job unpicking it all.”

Not that Morrison is complaining. “I can’t reiterate enough how important it is that people affected by persecution are given an opportunity, on their terms, to talk about it,” he says. “I am sure there are others who need holding to account and I am sure they are popular and I am sure they are seen as ‘good guys.’ I’d have a cleaner conscience as a shop if their career bombed regardless of how many sales we lost through the till.”

More than most, the album’s release was tailored toward vinyl-obsessed record collectors. Chris Brown, CFO of New England independent record store chain Bull Moose (and a co-founder of Record Store Day), said his stores were supposed to have Big Colors in four different versions: black vinyl, black vinyl with alternate cover, red vinyl, and orange vinyl. (At least one other color was available from Pax-Am.) “Multiple releases with different colors is a big deal,” Brown says.

Bull Moose and a number of other stores didn’t technically have to issue refunds because they don’t charge credit cards until they ship. “It won’t have a big effect on us in the end,” he says. “Many of the people who pre-ordered buy several records a week, so they will buy something else. Those who hadn’t already pre-ordered Better Oblivion Community Center did so, presumably to support Phoebe Bridgers. There’s plenty of other music that people can buy that doesn’t trouble their consciences.”

Judy Mills, owner of Mills Record Company in Kansas City, Missouri, acknowledges that under other circumstances, a big album from someone whose fans are devoted vinyl buyers would have been welcome. “A guaranteed heavy hitter of a release is always good news for a small business,” she says. But she adds that any financial repercussions her store might face are “inconsequential” compared with Adams’ alleged mistreatment. She praises Capitol for stopping the release.

“As I was a pulling a Ryan Adams box set off the floor, I also pulled his artist card from the racks, and I thought to myself: What do I do with the other artists out here, filling my sales floor, who are alleged to be sexual molesters, offenders, rapists, misogynists, and plain ol’ assholes?“ Mills adds. “It’s easy to stop stocking those artists going forward, but what about now that I own them?”

With Adams and R. Kelly in the news, Mills says it’s easy to choose not to stock them, new or used. “But then John Lennon, Jimmy Page, and Phil Spector, because they’re not in the news, it’s OK to carry them?” she wonders. “Not gonna stock the Beatles? Led Zep?”

Record stores may not be equipped to sort through the record industry’s long history of bad apples, but they can support its good eggs. “What I can do,” Mills says, “is stock so much Phoebe Bridgers, and champion every female artist I can. I can make sure female artists are played as much as male artists in the store, and on display, and have a face in our social-media picks. I can control that, at least in my small corner of the world.”
