As their first US visit came to a nearby in Spring of 2018, catastrophe struck AWAKEN I AM on their home soil in Brisbane, Australia. On the morning of May 15, guitarist Connor Verner-Oakley's multi year old life was stopped by the hands of an intentionally rash driver, whose ineffective endeavor took the wrong life. While in the US, the band had the capacity to cut "Dissolution," unfortunately the final recording starring Oakley (previously discharged April 30, 2018).

Following the accident, the remaining individuals from AWAKEN I AM come back to the US and pigeon straight into writing/recording with maker Taylor Larson (The Word Alive, Asking Alexandria). Aside from two melodies written before his passing, the other three tracks fill in as a tribute to Oakley. Some directed towards their fallen sibling, others at the responsible party and the melodies from those sessions turned out to be both cathartic and inspiring. Drummer Luke McKenzie divulges, "'Dissolution' was the last track we had the privilege of recording with Connor, he was so glad for it. We had the same dream with him and we would like to do right by him by keeping that dream alive with The Excellence In Catastrophe."

On the EP's title, McKenzie includes, "Through the majority of the pain, our objective was to take a totally tragic situation and make something beautiful from it, inspiring the collection name The Excellence In Catastrophe. Recording this was an opportunity to be miserable, furious, befuddled and attempt to find an approach to deal with the grief as well as can be expected through music."

Longtime friend (and sometimes fill-in for the band), Jay Sibthorpe, ventured in to record the new tracks. "Jay was exceptionally close with Connor," says bassist Ryan Oxford. "Having Jay here makes it the best thing on the planet because of the most horrible situation. Having somebody who did not mean anything to Connor would have been presumably one of the hardest things to adjust to."

The Magnificence In Tradegy is Awaken I Am's first EP, which became a tribute to their guitarist Connor Verner-Oakley when he passed away in an accident seventeen days after they put out the first single "Dissolution" on April 30th of 2018. Aside from that melody and "Close by", which were written with Oakley, the other three tracks were made in his respect. Some directed towards their fallen sibling, others at the responsible party.

Upon the second single's discharge "Indifference" in January of 2019, drummer Luke McKenzie explained:

The last track we had the privilege of recording with Connor was "Dissolution," he was so glad for it. We had the same dream with him and we would like to make Connor pleased by keeping that dream alive with The Excellence In Catastrophe.
